 Her father had grown up poor, in rural Nova Scotia. Her mother, whose family was also from Nova Scotia, grew up in slightly better circumstances: Atwood’s maternal grandfather was a country doctor, and an aunt had been the first woman to get a master’s degree in history from the University of Toronto. Atwood has long been Canada’s most famous writer, author of “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Alias Grace. Atwood is also the inventor and developer of the Long Pen and associated technologies that facilitate the remote robotic writing of documents.
